Provost Griffith is a political scientist and specialist on Caribbean and Inter-American security, drugs, crime, and terrorism issues who has published seven books, including Strategy and Security in the Caribbean (Praeger 1991), Drugs and Security in the Caribbean (Penn State University Press 1997), and Caribbean Security in the Age of Terror (Ian Randle Publishers 2004). He also has written articles in many scholarly journals, including Journal of Inter-American Studies & World Affairs, Dickinson Journal of International Law, Journal of Commonwealth & Comparative Politics, University of Miami Law Review, International Journal, Mershon International Studies Review, Caribbean Perspectives, Latin American Research Review, Caribbean Quarterly, Naval War College Review, The Round Table, International Journal, Third World Quarterly, Low Intensity Conflict & Law Enforcement, Joint Force Quarterly, and  Social & Economic Studies.

The Royal Military College of Canada and the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany are among places Dr. Griffith has been a Visiting Scholar, and he has been a consultant to Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Organization of American States, United States Agency for International Development, the Ministry of National Security of Jamaica, and other agencies. He has lectured at military and law enforcement colleges and agencies throughout the United States and the Caribbean and in Europe. His research has been funded by the MacArthur Foundation, Florida International University (FIU), and the University of Miami’s North-South Center, and he serves on the editorial board of Security and Defense Studies Review, published by the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies in Washington, DC. Ivelaw is a Past President of the Caribbean Studies Association, and has served in the national leadership of the Council on Undergraduate Research.

Dr. Griffith’s academic leadership experience includes service as Associate Dean for Budget and Facilities of the College of Arts and Sciences and later as Dean of The Honors College at FIU in Miami, Florida, and as Provost at Radford University in Southwest Virginia. He holds the Bachelor of Social Sciences with Distinction in Political Science from The University of Guyana, the Master of Arts from Long Island University, and the Master of Philosophy and the Ph.D. in Political Science from The City University of New York. He also graduated from the Millennium Leadership Institute of the American Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities, and from Harvard University’s Management and Leadership in Education program. His wife, Francille, is an RN with a Masters of Science in Health Services Administration. They have two children; Shakina Aisha is a senior majoring in Criminal Justice at Penn State University and Ivelaw Lamar is a sophomore studying Jazz Performance at the FIU School of Music.
