Dr. Gerena holds a Ph.D. in Educational Policy/Bilingual Education, MA in TESOL, MA in Urban Bilingual Education. Her professional interests are Dual Immersion Bilingual Education, L1 Support, L2 Acquisition Theory & Pedagogy, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), International Efforts to Improve Pedagogy in Language Teaching (Bologna 2018) & Effective Teaching Practices. Dr. Gerena began her career in NYC following the ASPIRA Consent Decree. For 40+ years she has been a bilingual advocate, language teacher, researcher, & teacher educator. In 2012, she received the prestigious Fulbright Scholar Award to research bilingual education in Madrid, Spain. In 2013, as an EL Specialist, she provided PD for Bilingual & CLIL teachers in Spain. From 2009-2015, she researched literacy practices for secondary NYC ELLs in an NSF grant. In 2017-2018, Dr. Gerena conducted research in NYC DOE bilingual classes to support & improve pedagogy.
