The CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE) is an exam that all CUNY college students must pass in order to graduate. The exam reflects the types of skills which students need to succeed in college and the workplace, and it involves the type of reading, writing, and thinking that students do in their regular classes.
Students must take the exam in the semester immediately following the completion of their 45th credit. As of September 1, 2003 ALL students pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree at CUNY must take and pass the CPE. Passage of the exam is a requirement for the associate degree. Only students who have earned a bachelor's degree or a higher degree from an accredited program are exempted from the CPE requirement.
