Testing Center: Vision and Regulations
Testing and Assessment have always been an integral part of high learning. It measures student’s ability to succeed in college. Success in college and a career or profession depends upon many factors. One factor, however, is academic literacy: the ability to understand and to think critically about ideas and information presented in print and the ability to write clearly, logically, and correctly.
Testing Center Responsibilities
- Assessing incoming students in their writing, reading and mathematical skills through the Skills Assessment Exams. Upon admission to the College, students are sent to the testing office to arrange for a testing session. Admitted students will be tested on three skills tests—Reading, Writing, and Math. Students are required to pass all three skills tests before registering for classes. Students, however, who have scored greater than 75 on the English and Math II & III Regents and students who are transferring from SUNY schools with greater than 45 credits are exempted from taking the skills tests. Students transferring from CUNY schools must take the skills tests, if they have not passed them before entering York.
- Providing exit exams for those who are in remedial courses; and for
- Proctoring the CUNY Proficiency Exam for students who have accumulated 45 credits or more and/or are ready to graduate.
