History and Philosophy of Mathematics

Write an essay (hand written or typed are both acceptable) of at least 500 words that deals with some aspect of the history of mathematics. This essay can take the form of biographical information about some particular mathematician or about the development of the history of some topic within mathematics. As part of your essay, you should explain in lay person terms some mathematical idea that the person whose biography you are giving developed or if you choose the development of some mathematical topic, explain some of the mathematics involved in that subject.

(Note: If you are also in my Math 484 class you have the choice of writing a project for this course or that one.)

Notes:

a. Regard this as a first draft and we will work together towards improving the first draft.

b. Do not fail to attend on Nov. 27, 2006 without having already handed the paper in or contacting me about its status. I would rather have it late than that you cut class to avoid turning it in.
