Eva Cristina Vásquez holds a Ph.D. in Theatre (2001) from the City University of New York Graduate School and University Center. Her dissertation topic was: Pregones Theatre: A Theatre For Social Change In The South Bronx. She earned a Master of Arts in Developmental Theatre (1993) from Hunter College (City University of New York). Her master’s essay was: The Puerto Rican Theatre for Children As A Tool for Personal, Social, and Political Empowerment. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, with a School of Humanities, Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre (1988). Eva Vásquez is an Associate Professor at the York College (City University of New York) Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Humanities. She has coordinated the Women’s Studies Program (2003-2004), the Spanish Discipline Program (2008-2012), and is currently coordinating the Puerto Rican Studies Program (2017-present). She has also served in the York College Senate and Faculty Caucus (2005-2013/ 2015-2019), as well as in the CUNY Council on World Language Study (2002-pesent). In the New York theater scene, Eva Vásquez has collaborated as an actress, playwright, researcher, and educator with a variety of theatre companies including: Repertorio Español, IATI Theater, Teatro Thalía, LATEA, LaMicro Theater, the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, and Pregones Theater, among others. Eva is a founding member of Teatro Círculo (1994), where she also serves as a board member. During most of the 35 years of Círculo’s continuous work, she has coordinated the company’s educational program, focusing on developing student audiences through the creation of academic study materials for the classroom. Eva Vásquez collected and edited Círculo de plata: Antología de estrenos mundiales de Teatro Círculo (Arte Poética Press, 2021); she is also the author of the anthology’s introductory chapter. She was part of the IATI playwriting workshop, led by Pablo García Gámez, that culminated in the publication of Se vende, se alquila o se regala: Antología de dramaturgia latina en Nueva York (Editorial Campana, 2008). Eva’s Ph.D. dissertation, Pregones Theatre: A Theatre For Social Change In The South Bronx, was published by Routledge as part of their Latino Communities: Emerging Voices- Political, Social, Cultural and Legal Issues series (2003). From its inception in 2023, Eva is part of the editorial board of EntreTmas: Revista Digital (https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-e&q=entretmas+revista+digital), where she collaborates with the editing of the theater section as well as producing didactic materials for the study of plays. As a playwright, her theatrical pieces Amor perdido (2003), Lágrimas negras (2007), and Carmen Loisaida (2011) have been produced by Teatro Círculo. They are also included in Cículo de plata. In addition, Torniquete (2018) was published in Sillas en la frontera: Mujer, teatro y migraciones (Editorial Universidad de Almería, 2019). Her play Intermedio en el fin del mundo is featured in Los Bárbaros: Poeta en Nueva York (No.18-19, 2021, pp. 31-40). As a scholar and researcher, Eva has participated in international conferences including the Primer Congreso Anual Instituto Cervantes: Lengua e identidad: variación lingüística e igualdad social (2022); the Latin American Studies Association (LASA: 2016, 2009, 2006); the Latino Artists Round Table (LART, NY: 2018, 2016, 2014, 2006, 2004, 2002), the Casa de las Américas’ Latinos in the U.S. Conference (Cuba: 2019, 2017, 2015). Most recently, Eva was part of the organizing committee for Teatro Círculo’s first Teatro Novo Hispano Conference (November 2023). Throughout her theatrical, research, and student career, Eva Vásquez has been recognized with a variety of awards: Latin Alternative Theater Awards (LATA, 2024); Thalía Award (2023) Asociación de Críticos del Espectáculo (ACE: 2013, 2011, 2008); Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA: 2011, 2007, 2006); New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA: 2010); CUNY Faculty Fellowship Publication Program (2006); Alpha Sigma Lambda Award for Excellence in Teaching (Fordham University: 1999); Edward and Sally Van Lier Fellowship (1993-1994); CUNY-CUBA Caribbean Exchange Program (1993); CUNY-UPR Academic Exchange Program (1988-1991); University of Puerto Rico Presidential Fellowship (1988-1991).
