Nursing Program Hosts First Transition to Practice Workshop
The late fall semester event was the Department of Nursing's first Transition to Practice Workshop and featured York professors, guest professionals and York alumni now in the field.
"We worked together to form interactive learning activities that will help prepare our senior nursing students for the transition into their nursing careers," said Professor Jasmine Bratton-Robinson. "Guest speakers included, Dr. Leslie Keiler, chair and professor, Teacher Education at York College. She presented on Effective Communication. Northwell Health Institute for Nursing, Office of the Chief Nurse Executive, Ivy Torres, MS, and Northwell Health Director of Human Resources, Ellen Lorenz, BSN, presented on various topics that included sharing of their professional journey as registered nurses and information on the Northwell Health hospital system."
Dr. Bratton-Robinson added that Ellen Lorenz, BSN discussed the dos and don'ts of resume writing. York College Nursing clinical associate professor, Holistic Nurse Specialist, Dr. David Rabinowitsch shared an informative presentation on professionalism, holistic nursing, and the importance of self-care. Dr. David Rabinowitsch guided students, faculty, and other participants through a series of relaxation and centering activities. There was also an alumni panel discussing life post-nursing school and experiences as actively employed registered nurses. The former students included Marvin Anciro, RN, BS, Chanelle Jones, RN, BS, Tin Mar, RN, BS, and Savina Whitlow, RN, BS. The former students varied in nursing background and were able to provide a well-rounded view of life as registered nurses. They answered several questions from the senior nursing students and shared contact information for further mentoring. This workshop also included mock interview rounds. According to Dr. Bratton-Robinson, the workshop was facilitated and organized by Nursing faculty. The nursing department would like to thank the IT, Public Safety, and the Purchasing Departments, for their support in making this event happen.
