York CUNY Physician Asst. Students & Faculty Attend NYSSPA Conference

Students and faculty from the York PA program participated in the annual New York State Society of PAs (NYSSPA) conference, this fall, held in Saratoga Springs, New York.

York College PA students and faculty participated in several professional and educational activities at the conference. A team of PA students, led by Abbie Bowers, Azline Exime, and Immadullah Hussaini, participated NYSSPA Challenge Bowl, competing against teams from PA schools across the State. After placing second in the initial round of medical questions, the York Cardinal Symptoms team played a highly competitive round against the eventual runner-up from Stony Brook University, in a match that came down to the final question. “York was the only program to have a Challenge Bowl team made up entirely of first-year PA students, competing against students from other programs with significantly more experience,” said Jason Herel, Assistant Professor and Academic Coordinator of the PA program. “Our students showed a high level of medical knowledge and poise, and should be in a great position to have even more success next year.”

Both Professor Herel and PA faculty member Dr. Lorraine Sanassi presented during the conference as well. Professor Herel gave two presentations: “PAD for the PCP and the PANRE,” and “For Your ENTertainmENT...an Ear, Nose, and Throat Review for the PANRE.” Dr. Sanassi presented “Beating the Bellyache: The Approach to Abdominal Pain”. All three presentations were well attended and well received by their audiences. Dr. Harry Persaud presented a poster on the various modalities of instruction in the PA program during the didactic year. Dr. Persaud was recognized at the NYSSPA Gala for his poster, winning first-place in the educational research category  nysspa poster competition.

Congratulations to Dr. Persaud and the entire York delegation on their success at the conference!
