Supplemental Instruction

• To increase retention within targeted historically difficult courses
• To improve student grades in targeted historically difficult courses
• To increase the graduation rates of students

The SI sessions include informal reviews in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools and predict test questions. Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working collaboratively.

A Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader is a student who has successfully completed the course they are leading, and helps their peers succeed by facilitating out-of-class, interactive study sessions, focusing on course content and effective study skills.

Lead regularly scheduled informal study sessions where students review course material, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for exams.

Actively promote the SI program to students, encouraging attendance and participation.

Attend the same lectures as the students they are supporting, taking notes and staying on pace with the course content.

Assist students in becoming familiar with study skills and learning strategies that will help them in the course.

Act as role models, demonstrating good student behavior and a professional attitude.

Plan and prepare for SI sessions, including interactive activities, worksheets, and other resources that encourage peer-to-peer learning.

Participate in training and development activities, including orientation.

Handle administrative tasks such as taking attendance and submitting reports.

Develop and implement a comprehensive SI program.  

Identify targeted courses for SI support.  

Gain faculty support for the program. 

Select and train SI Leaders.  

Plan and direct supervision meetings with SI Leaders.  

Monitor the quality of SI sessions to ensure they are effective and engaging.  

Provide feedback to SI Leaders on their performance.  

Evaluate the effectiveness of the SI program and make recommendations for improvement.  

Collect and analyze data to assess student outcomes.  

Maintain open communication with SI Leaders, faculty, and other relevant stakeholders.

Mentor and support SI leaders, providing guidance and feedback on their role and performance.

Maintain open communication with SI leaders, discussing course content, and addressing any concerns or issues promptly.

Encourage student participation in SI sessions by making announcements in class, promoting the program, and emphasizing its value.

Model good teaching practices and effective study strategies, which can help SI leaders in their own sessions.

Maintaining a professional attitude about matters such as class standards, grades, and student complaints.
