New Aviation and Aerospace Academy Launched

Port Authority and York collaborate as part of JFK Redevelopment Program

October 19, 20223 -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced an agreement with York College at the City University of New York to establish a new Aviation and Aerospace Academy that will provide aviation-focused weekend and summer education and enrichment program in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for up to 700 students from grades 1 through 12. The program will provide Queens students from the communities surrounding the Port Authority's two New York airports with the STEM education, skills, and training to prepare them for jobs and careers at the airport and in aviation, airport management and aerospace technology. Applications for the Fall semester are now being accepted. The York College-based Academy is part of the JFKR Community Development Program and was developed based on discussions with the JFKR Community Advisory Council, co-chaired by Congressman Gregory Meeks and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards.

“The transformation of JFK Airport into a world-class gateway is also an opportunity to extend the benefits from this historic, $19 billion investment to children and teens from the neighboring communities of Queens,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. “By partnering with York College and the terminal developers at JFK, we are empowering students to pursue careers in the aviation industry.”

Three Sessions Throughout the Year

The JFKR Aviation & Aerospace Academy at York College will be conducted in three sessions throughout the year. Fall and spring sessions will be offered for four weekends, each enrolling 300 students.

Summer Program

During the Summer, 125 students will participate in a four-to-six-week enrichment program. The curriculum includes themes and hands-on activities related to aviation, science, finance, economics, mathematics, cybersecurity and computer science, drones, and robotics, varying by age group.

Cohorts & Stipends

Students will be taught in four cohorts – grades 1 through 3, grades 4 and 5, grades 6 through 8 and grades 9 through 12. Students in grades 9 through 12 will receive a $1,200 stipend and will earn three college credits during the summer session.

The summer session will be five days a week for four-to-six weeks, depending on grade.

Redeveloping JFK Airport in Lockstep with the Local Community

In 2018, the JFK Redevelopment Community Advisory Council was formed. It is co-chaired by U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and is composed of elected officials, community boards, business and nonprofit organizations, civic organizations, and clergy leaders from the targeted local communities of southeast Queens, southwest Queens, the Rockaways, and western portions of Nassau County.

Since its inception, the council has been working with the Port Authority and its private partners to expand community outreach efforts and develop community-focused programs, ensuring that this ambitious project solicits ongoing feedback from local stakeholders and provides meaningful opportunities for local businesses, MWBEs, students, and jobseekers. This includes programming to advance the Port Authority's commitment to a 30 percent MWBE contracting goal in all categories of work, and a special focus on opportunities for local businesses across all aspects of the JFK redevelopment program, including terminal projects, which will be built by union labor under project-labor agreements.
