Program Overview

The York College Paraprofessional Upskilling Program empowers paraprofessionals to become certified Bilingual teachers across multiple subject areas. In partnership with high-needs public schools, this program is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled educators who reflect and understand their communities.
To prepare dedicated paraprofessionals to serve as certified teachers and advocates for bilingual and multilingual learners.
Eligibility Requirements
- Current paraprofessionals or teaching assistants (P/TAs) in NYC or Valley Stream districts, or applying
- Fluency in English and another language
- Commitment to obtaining a Bilingual teaching certification
- Background in working with diverse student populations
- Meet admission requirements for York College
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting multilingual learners
- Interest in fostering inclusive, culturally responsive classrooms

- Weekly Paraprofessional Seminar: Reflection and professional growth sessions
- Clinical Experience: Hands-on teaching practice embedded within your current school role
