WAC Recommendations for Fulfilling Writing Intensive Requirements
This page is intended to clarify some of the issues and provide students and their advisors guidance in selecting courses.

There are two separate requirements for York College students that involve Writing Intensive courses.
To fulfill the Writing Intensive portions of both the York College Degree Requirements and the Pathways College Option:
- Students who began their undergraduate education at York College, and students who transferred to York College without completing a recognized degree elsewhere, must take three WI courses: two lower-division (100-299) WI courses from any discipline and one upper-division (300-499) WI course in their major.
The credits from the upper-division WI course can be used to count towards the Pathways College Option Writing requirement: if the upper-division course is three credits, it can also fulfill part of the College Option in Pathways. Otherwise, the student also needs to have at least one 3-credit WI course at the 200 level or higher or take a WRIT 301/302/303/304 course.
- Students who have completed a recognized Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree must take one upper-division WI course in their major.
If this is a 3-credit course, it will fulfill 3 of the 6 credits required in the College Option. To complete all 6 credits in the College Option, these students will have to take either a second 3-credit WI course at the 200 level or higher in any discipline, or a WRIT 301/302/303/304 course.
- Students who have completed a recognized Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree must take three WI courses: two lower-division (100-299) WI courses from any discipline and one upper-division (300-499) WI course in their major.
These students must also fulfill the 6-credit College Option. If at least one of their lower-division WI courses is a 3-credit course numbered 200-299, it will fulfill 3 of the 6 credits required in the College Option. If their upper-division WI course is a 3-credit course, it will fulfill the remaining 3 of the 6 credits required in the College Option.
The WAC program recommends that students who have completed an A.A.S. select a 3-credit, 200-299 level course as one of their lower-division WI courses in order to efficiently fulfill both the lower-division WI requirements and the College Option Writing requirement.
- Students who have completed a recognized bachelor’s degree must only take one upper-division (300-499) WI course in their major. These students are exempt from College Option (and all Pathways) requirements.
