Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs urges all faculty and staff who intend on using animals in their research initiatives to first obtain approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for the regulation of the animal care and use program and its constituents as pronounced in the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

  • The NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare - The NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare includes links and resources to the Public Health Service Policy on Human Care and Use of Laboratory Animals in Research, the Guide for the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals in Research, and reports from the Office of Protection from Research Risks concerning animal research.
  • The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service - The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, is held accountable for the enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act. This webpage serves as a hub for many other sites related to animal welfare and research - which includes a link to get a copy of the Animal Welfare Act and the USDA regulations regarding several animal species, including horses, farm animals, dogs, cats, and exotic species.
